Our team is verifying video footage and photographs shared this morning that show the scene of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials say fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he later died of his wounds. An investigation is under way.
Our starting point to check the site of where the pictures originated was based on posts indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby residential complex seen in the footage.
Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed where the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
