The Hamilton Island Resort, a Iconic Queensland Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Set to be Acquired by American Investment Giant.
An iconic tropical holiday destination situated within the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based private equity firm in a deal reportedly valued at A$1.2 billion.
“We are honored to build on the legacy and commitment that the Oatley family has established in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” stated a senior representative.
Details of the Sale
The New York-headquartered, Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending standard regulatory approvals.
The sellers released a statement noting they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Size and Amenities
Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton spans more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately 30% of the area is developed, featuring a substantial range of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is described as a major job provider in the Whitsundays, supporting a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a wide network of regional partners, vendors, and local businesses.
Historical Context at Ownership
The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and vintner, first bought the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's development boom initially started in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that housed Australian vacationers from the outback and from the south.

The acquiring firm has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in several nations, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
