Shoaib Bashir Makes Surprise Inclusion in English Ashes Squad
England have opted for a twelve-player squad just 48 hours ahead of the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir earning a surprise place.
The 22-year-old’s inclusion indicates that the tourists will delay until the day of the first Test to decide whether the venue pitch favor a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spin bowler.
Both pace bowlers are part of the selected squad, indicating there are no doubts about their pace bowler’s fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse complete the attack, with the latter expected to miss out if the spinner enters the starting XI.
Ground Conditions Lean Toward Pace Bowlers
Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to opt for an all-seam attack on a ground that has staged several previous Tests.
During these games, 134 wickets have fallen to seamers, with only 40 to spin bowling.
Among these spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken the bulk, while all visiting spinners together have only eight.
On a ground renowned for its speed and carry, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, stated that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team relying on seamers is still the probable decision.
Alternative Choices Weighed
There had been rumors that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the side to offer some slow bowling while additionally strengthening the batting lineup.
But McCullum has chosen to stick with Bashir, having stated previously that he would be his preferred spinner for the series.
Earlier, Nathan Lyon described the English spinner as “OK,” saying that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still England’s best spinner.”
“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who lack experience in the past in Australian pitches,” Lyon said of slow bowling in matches Down Under.
“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so opponents perform and perform well out here.”
