A high-ranking Russian general has been fatally wounded following an explosion in Moscow, according to an investigative body.

The incident occurred on Monday morning when an bomb placed beneath a vehicle was set off, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov held the position of the head of the armed forces' unit responsible for operational readiness.

Authorities mentioned that one line of inquiry points to the possible involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has offered no public response.

Scene of the Attack

Personnel have been sent to the site, which is said to be in a southerly district of the capital.

Reports state the detonation happened in a vehicle lot close to a residential building.

Series of Assaults

Since the onset of the full-scale conflict in Ukraine, a series of Russian military commanders have been targeted within Moscow.

This most recent event echoes other serious incidents, including:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a vehicle explosion in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov died in late 2024 when a device placed on a scooter was triggered from afar.

While a source from Ukraine previously connected Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such claims are rarely formally acknowledged as a matter of policy.

Hostilities has witnessed covert operations moving into the heart of the Russian capital.

The investigation into General Sarvarov's death continues to be active.
