Russell Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Jaxson Dart Comments

NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this week, responding to latest criticism from his former coach Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated on X. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."

The quarterback's response directly referenced the notorious Bounty Gate issue from 2009-11, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.

At that time, the league determined that the Saints had incentivized team members for delivering aggressive tackles on rival teams. Consequently, Payton was suspended from the league for a full year.

What Sparked the Latest Dispute

The quarterback's reaction came after Payton delivered remarks following the Broncos' historic comeback win over the New York. Payton remarked that the Giants had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the first-string QB.

Moreover, Payton implied that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson over Dart.

"I was talking to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" the coach stated.

Context of the Wilson-Payton Relationship

  • The quarterback was traded to the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245 million extension.
  • The team went 4-11 in his first season before Denver hired Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a stint in broadcasting.
  • The coach replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a decision that prevented the player from suffering an injury.

If Wilson remained on the roster by March 2024, his $37M pay for 2025 would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was released, ending the contentious split between the player and his coach.
