In a distinct departure from other Dragon Quest remakes, such as the recently launched HD-2D versions, this reimagining adopts a charming 3D aesthetic. Environments appear to look like detailed model sets, with characters featuring a delightful toy-like appearance.

Significant Mechanical Improvements and Modernizations

Square Enix has implemented numerous changes to update the classic gameplay loop. Among these are:

• Expedited Overworld Battles: Similar to modern role-playing games, low-level monsters can now be defeated directly on the exploration screen eliminating the need for entering a separate turn-based combat sequence.
• Variable Battle Speed: Players can speed up battle sequences to quickly power through less challenging encounters.
• Expanded Vocation Mechanics: One completely new job class was introduced for this remake. Additionally, party members now have the capacity to master a secondary vocation, greatly expanding customization options.

These changes are designed to mitigate one of the 2000 game's frequent criticisms: its daunting length. That original storyline could easily take over 100 hours to complete. The new version has been expressly designed to improve flow and cut down on any repetition.
