Patrick Bamford Signs With the Blades Despite Leading Abusive Chants About Coach Wilder
Patrick Bamford has signed with the Championship side just half a year after instigating derogatory chants targeting the team's coach, Wilder.
The 32-year-old striker, a free agent since leaving Leeds, has put pen to paper on a deal joining the Championship strugglers until January. Bamford's seven-year time at Elland Road was ended by mutual consent in August.
Among Bamford’s final notable acts as a Leeds player was to lead insulting songs about Wilder during the club’s success festivities this spring. Currently, the one-cap England player will feature under Wilder as the Blades’ manager aims to lift the team he loves away from the bottom places.
Past Conflict Involving the Striker and Wilder
The pair had history prior to Leeds moved up back to the top flight the previous campaign and United lost the playoff final to Sunderland. Wilder described the forward as “a muppet” when the roles were reversed during the 2018-19 season and Sheffield United secured automatic promotion while Leeds United fell short in the promotion playoffs.
Reconciliation and Moving Forward
Everything appears has been forgiven and forgotten with Sheffield United, the Championship’s lowest scorers, in desperate need of a boost up front and Bamford hoping to resurrect his playing days.
The Wilder chant spread widely this spring. An apologetic Bamford along with Leeds boss, Farke, called the Sheffield United manager the next day.
Chris Wilder stated at the time: “Spoke with Patrick recently and I’ve no problem at all with that. I’m not sure regarding the words used from a fellow professional! However I valued and respected him giving me a call.
“We spent a short while and similarly I spoke to Daniel Farke as well and had a half-hour chat together and he is a super guy, a class act. Back in my playing days we used to dish it out and accept it and that’s an integral part of football at every level, even on a Sunday morning. I have no problem at all. I am cool with it and I said that to Patrick.”
Latest Playing Struggles
Bamford featured in 18 games with Leeds United in the previous campaign but the ex- Forest, Chelsea and Middlesbrough player has struggled with injury in recent years.
