McLaren Points Finger at Competitors for Piastri-Norris Collision

Wheel flies off McLaren after collision between Piastri and Norris

One tire comes loose from the McLaren of Norris after he made contact with fellow driver Piastri at the beginning of the US GP sprint race.

McLaren F1 team bosses Zak Brown and Andrea Stella attributed opposing racers for the incident between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris at the beginning of the United States Grand Prix sprint race.

Piastri, leading his teammate in the championship by 22 points, made contact with his team-mate after making contact with Sauber's Hulkenberg.

The crash took both team drivers out of the event, along with the Fernando Alonso, who was on the inner side of Hulkenberg.

Team Executives Express Disappointment Over Crash

Brown, the team's chief executive officer, stated to broadcasters that some of the racing at the front was "inexperienced", remarking: "Clearly Hulkenberg made contact with Oscar and he had no business being where he was."

McLaren F1 boss Stella added: "Our feeling is that we are displeased that we were denied the possibility to compete."

"It's surprising that some racers with a lot of expertise don't act with necessary care. Go to the initial turn, make sure you avoid harming other drivers and carry on."

The team clarified that the team principal was referring to both Hulkenberg and the Aston Martin driver.

Differing Perspectives on the Crash

Nevertheless, former champion Hill, commentating for BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, said he believed Piastri had not demonstrated enough awareness of the dangers of the opening turn of an Formula 1 event when he chose to cut back to try to overtake his teammate.

Piastri had a better start than Norris and initially challenged on the outer side on the ascending entry to the turn.

But he then moved inside in an attempt to get a advantage on Norris on the exit, only to make contact with Hulkenberg.

Racer Comments After the Incident

The McLaren driver said: "Less than perfect but I haven't seen what happened, I attempted to cut back on Lando and we were both very far from the corner apex and then got a hit and it sent me into Norris. Unfortunate."

Norris commented: "I just was struck, right? I was not at fault. Behind us things happened and I just was unfortunate and was struck because of it. I am unsure. I need to look a bit more carefully. It's more drivers further back just being a bit reckless and we are the consequence of that."

Alonso said: "At one point I believed I was in the correct position on the inside, but some vehicles came very quickly from the outer side changing direction and then I was there in the center."

Hulkenberg, who had earned a best qualifying fourth place, said: "Big frustrations. All the good work from the previous day in the bin. Just messy."

"Piastri turned in pretty aggressively trying to get the inside line and exit of Turn One but I cannot vanish."

"I had Alonso attack on the inner side and I couldn't see him any more. I wanted to provide room for him and then Piastri turned in and the contact was inevitable."

Aftermath and Team Response

McLaren will analyze the crash with their racers but only after the race weekend. Both vehicles needed extensive work before grand prix qualifying at 22:00 BST on Saturday.

The team principal said: "Overall displeased but we take it on the chin, we are now focusing on fixing the cars, there is a lot to do and then we will resume the event from there."

"We are in a strong position from our performance point of view so I trust we have the opportunity to compete, compete fairly and capitalise on our performance."

"Championship points are the key thing, I prefer not to talk about mal-intent, just prudence. A little more prudence would be good for all involved."

Championship Implications

The race was taken by the Verstappen, who closed in on both McLaren drivers in the standings - he is now fifty-five points behind the Australian and 33 behind of the Briton.

The team boss said: "The consequence is what the maths says - we missed out on eight championship points with both drivers, but we focus on ourselves. We have a very competitive vehicle and two strong racers. We anticipate just some standard competition."

Verstappen said he was approaching the title race one event at a time.
