Kalimuendo Strikes as Nottingham Forest Secure Nostalgic Win Against Malmö

“You’ll never sing that, champions of Europe,” rang out through the stadium as Forest fans reveled in a further win against their Swedish opponents. Much has happened since Trevor Francis’s winning header secured the continental trophy back in 1979, but Forest continue to cherish those memories. Similarly, major changes have taken place in the weeks since the manager assumed control, with the team appearing refreshed and earning a convincing victory thanks to goals from Arnaud Kalimuendo, Ryan Yates, and Milenkovic, enhancing their prospects of progressing in the European competition.

Gaining Momentum with Third Consecutive Victory

For Forest, this performance – against a Malmö side that had not played for almost three weeks after ending sixth in their home competition – represented a third straight triumph across all competitions and further built on the momentum generated from the previous week's success at Anfield. While this match was a re-run of Forest’s historic success in name, the game itself was devoid of any significant tension or nerves.

It proved to be an event dripping in nostalgia, an eagerly awaited meeting and the third competitive meeting between the sides since the European Cup final over four decades past.

Forest leaned into the heritage, honoring the heroes of 1979 by giving them, along with their visiting counterparts, the VIP welcome. Thirteen members of the Malmö's team from then were also present. Both teams shared a dinner together prior to the kick-off. Forest legends and their teammates received a rousing welcome when they assembled on the field a quarter of an hour before kick-off, and a typically superb display was shown in the home stand.

Remembering History

“May 30, 1979, John Robertson delivered the ball from the left flank,” displayed one part of a large tifo, in capital letters. While no one required a reminder of what ensued, the rest was unfurled as the squads emerged from the tunnel. “And there’s Francis,” it continued. A second brilliant tifo showed Clough observing proceedings beside his right-hand man Peter Taylor on a dugout at the Munich stadium.

Dominance from the Outset

So, Forest had drunk in those wonderful memories, but what about the performance on the evening? It was impressive, too. They were in full command from the moment Kalimuendo fired an attempt off target inside the opening moments and established a 2-0 lead by the break. Domínguez sent an early header off target and then Abbott, on his first European start, had a go.

It seemed appropriate that Ryan Yates, who came to the club aged eight, made the initial breakthrough in the visitors' defense captained by their own academy product skipper, Jansson, previously of Leeds United and Brentford. The home centre-back Nikola Milenkovic saw a cross deflect off a defender and into the path of the midfielder, who finished right-footed from just inside the penalty area to register his first goal since last March.

Second Strike Seals Control

The scorer was involved in the team's second goal on the verge of half-time, too, his unmarked header parried by Malmö’s shot-stopper Ellborg but the alert forward on hand to convert the loose ball from close range. McAtee, the midfielder given a rare start and only his second appearance since the autumn, was the catalyst, lofting a perfect ball towards Yates at the back post.

Just moments before, Hudson-Odoi’s low effort was deflected aside off Malmö defender Rösler, son of ex- Man City forward Uwe Rösler, and an free Milenkovic also earlier had a powerful header instinctively repelled by Ellborg, who returned in place of the ex- Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen.

Opponent's Struggles

This was Malmö’s initial game since the domestic league concluded on 9 November, and they found it hard to equal Forest’s energy. Forest made it 3-0 when Milenkovic scored after his defensive colleague Murillo kept alive a corner. Yates had a volley stopped, but the Serbian defender Milenkovic feasted on the leftovers.

The home side then went for the jugular, with the winger dinking a right-foot shot on to the bar before Ibrahim Sangaré sent an optimistic effort wide from 30 yards. It was that kind of evenings. The manager, aware of the upcoming domestic fixture here against Brighton & Hove Albion, made multiple alterations from the side that stunned the Reds at Anfield last weekend, when they also netted three times, though he called on substitutes and Igor Jesus midway through the final period.

Smooth Evening for Forest

It proved a flawless night for Nottingham Forest. The coach could withdraw the defender with the match long since boxed off and later introduced teenage full-back Jimmy Sinclair for his first-team debut. He talked about the Forest old guard supplying “valuable insights” at regular meetings and, almost five decades on, the current crop showed they are able of a few nuggets of excitement, as well.
