Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their recent conversation.
“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”
The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
“Still unsure,” he added. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”
New York police released security footage Monday of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries were reported.
The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday morning about halfway between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse just had a newborn.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd did not participate this season, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.
Boyd came to New York as a new signing in spring and was expected to be an important component of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has remained around the team all season long while working his way back.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he attends every game. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with New York in March.
