California's Governor Acknowledges He Is Weighing a 2028 Presidential Run

Gavin Newsom, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has revealed that he plans to decide on whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 following the 2026 elections are over.

"Yes, it would be dishonest otherwise," Newsom stated when pressed about contemplating a campaign for president following the 2026 elections. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I'm not."

Newsom's current term as governor concludes in January 2027, and he cannot run again. However, he noted that any choice is still years away.

"It's up to destiny," he remarked.

Growing Prominence as a Administration Opponent

He has emerged as a notable critic of the former president's team, leveraging his digital presence and pushing a proposition that would expand Democratic congressional seats in following GOP gerrymandering. This move has made him a target from political opponents.

Clash on Transportation

Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that Newsom shows no concern about the state's residents in a Sunday interview on a major news network. The secretary revealed a strategy to pull taxpayer dollars from the state and warned revoking the power to issue commercial driver's licenses.

"I intend to cut a significant sum from California," he declared, after a recent fatal crash in the state involving an undocumented trucker that resulted in loss of life and casualties.

The governor's team pointed out that the national authorities had approved the worker's status repeatedly, which allowed him to obtain a CDL under national regulations.

The transportation secretary had before stated he was holding back $40m from California for failing to implement English language requirements for CDL holders.

Strong Response from the Administration

"Former D-list reality star, now cabinet member, fails to grasp national statutes," Newsom's office retorted in a previous statement countering Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, unlike this clown, we rely on data: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a fatal crash rate significantly lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the single state with more commercial holders – has a rate markedly elevated than California. Data speaks for itself. The federal leadership misleads."

Public Opinion and Future Prospects

A this month's poll found that a majority of the party and almost half of voters believed that the governor ought to campaign for president in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, Newsom's favorability has grown to an average of 33.5% from previous levels, while his disapproval has fallen from an average of over 40% to current figures.

Earlier this year, Newsom remarked while on a trip several battleground states that he had "no clue" about his plans for 2028.

He also referenced his earlier challenges, including being found to have a learning disability at the young age of five.

"The notion that a person who got 960 on his SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was typically not at the front – the fact that this is even suggested is, by itself, extraordinary," he said. "Who the hell knows? I'm looking forward to who emerges in 2028 and who meets that moment. And that is the issue for the voters."
