2K Brings Onboard Popular Battle Royale Producer to Rescue Challenged Hero Shooter Project Ethos
2K Games has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the forthcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Leadership Transition Comes After Lukewarm Response
The new appointee takes on the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' underwhelming unveiling last autumn.
Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated employees about this organizational change through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had indicated the requirement for a clearer direction.
The president noted that the developers is now overhauling the project with a refreshed approach, aiming to address gamer demands.
A Pattern of Key Acquisitions
The news mirrors a similar move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they hired Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to work on the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the complete content from Ismailer's memo:
Hello Everyone—
I understand you all just completed your gathering - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a note, I stated the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and talented developers we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that collaboration to persist.”
Through your commitment and adaptability, particularly over the last year, you repeatedly show that.
The gamer responses from last autumn’s Project ETHOS demo was revealing. It validated the potential of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the requirement for a more distinct brand.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You took the criticism to mind and reimagined Project ETHOS with a renewed goal - one that’s ready to achieve its ambition to our fans.
Our confidence in this project strengthens every day. To boost the outstanding development you’ve made, It is a pleasure to welcome Ben Brinkman as the latest Director of the team. After several months of conversations, Ben comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.
His management and background in the PVP shooter genre is vast, having dedicated the recent years creating and overseeing some of the most well-known franchises in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in welcoming him next week. We are all excited to continue seeing the progress of the game in the time to follow.
The President
Experience of the New Leader
Brinkman presently serves in the role of executive producer and head of production at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. He earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in diverse development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, before that, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Game Details and Vision
Project Ethos was unveiled in last year in conjunction with a public demo. Initially, 31st Union presented the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an thrilling advancement on the category."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch explains. "Challenge the rivals with fresh skills, risks, and challenges that shift every session. Do you leave securely with your collected items? Or take a risk, gamble everything, and pray your group can earn top ranking? The choice is yours."
Project Ethos lacks an announced launch window or consoles, but fans can look forward to more updates as production progresses.
